Freedom of Information

The Territory Government passed the Information Act to give people access to government records. The Information Act preserves the right of Territorians to access government records and, at the same time, protects private information from being disclosed.

Under the Act, anyone can apply for access to government information. This includes applications to modify personal information that is considered incorrect, incomplete or out of date. Anyone may apply for access to records that public sector organisations are required to keep as evidence of their activities.

An Information Commissioner has been appointed as the independent officer to oversee the Freedom of Information and Privacy provisions of the Act.
