Northern Territory Electoral Commission

Following a review of the Northern Territory electoral system, the Territory Government established the first ever independent electoral commission in the Northern Territory in 2004.

The Northern Territory Electoral Commission manages election processes and voter enrolment in the Territory.  The commission plays a key role in the Territory’s democratic system through the delivery of electoral services that are independent, open, fair and transparent. The commission provides electoral services to the Territory community, the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, municipal councils, community government councils and other organisations.

The commission is responsible for conducting parliamentary and non-parliamentary elections while also maintaining the Northern Territory electoral roll. Other key responsibilities include:

  • delivering public electoral awareness programs
  • providing advice and reports relating to electoral matters to the Legislative Assembly
  • conducting electoral research
  • providing support to the Redistribution Committees, which redistribute electoral boundaries.
