Declaring financial interests

In 2008, the Northern Territory Parliament passed the Legislative Assembly (Disclosure of Interests) Act, which repealed and replaced the Legislative Assembly (Register of Members' Interests) Act of 1982.  This Act requires Members of the Assembly to declare their interests and clarifies which interests should be declared. Members must disclose their personal pecuniary interests, such as shareholdings and real estate.  They must also disclose interests held by spouses, de facto partners and dependent children.

The Clerk of the Legislative Assembly is the Registrar of Members Interests.  The Register of Members’ Interests is held in the Office of the Clerk and is available for public inspection by appointment.

Unrelated to the Act cited above, Standing Orders of the Legislative Assembly provide that no Member may sit on a Parliamentary Committee if that Member has a particular direct pecuniary interest in a matter under inquiry by the committee.
