Ombudsman

All Territorians have the right to be treated fairly and appropriately by public authorities. The Ombudsman’s role is to resolve complaints lodged by Territorians who feel they have been mistreated. This is a free service that allows complaints to be resolved quickly and fairly by a body independent of government.

People unable to resolve a complaint with a government agency can approach the Ombudsman to help resolve the issue. This process makes government agencies more accountable and open to public scrutiny. The Ombudsman's thorough investigation process guarantees a balanced and honest assessment of cases and ensures that the appropriate action is taken to resolve complaints.

Public authorities that come under the jurisdiction of the Ombudsman include:

  • all Northern Territory Government departments
  • schools
  • hospitals
  • government transport services
  • Police, Fire and Emergency Services
  • the Power Water Corporation
  • the Darwin Port Corporation
  • Charles Darwin University
  • the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education
  • local government councils, shire councils and most community government councils.
