Public Information
The Public Information Act came into effect on 1 August to deliver greater transparency around how government distributes public information. The Act is accompanied by a set of guidelines, which outline how the Territory Government, the Opposition and government can provide public information paid for with public funds.
The Act provides clear direction on what government can and cannot do when distributing public information, and covers everything from websites, displays and ministers’ messages to newspaper, radio and television advertisements.
The Act, which is policed by the Auditor-General, states that public information paid for with public funds must:
- not promote party political interests
- not include statements that are misleading or factually inaccurate
- clearly distinguish a statement of facts from a statement of comments.
The Act can be viewed at the Legislative Assembly’s website.
